This is one of my grandma's recipe.
She hails from Coimbatore district and this is their speciality. This is an all time favourite in our house, and it is a great hit among our friends too.

Ingredients:
Tamrind = a big lemon size (soak and take thick paste)
Red Chillies - 6 to 10 depending upon the hotness of the chilly
Onion - 1
Coriander seeds- 2 tbspn
Gram dhall - 1 tbspn
Pepper - 1/4 tbspn
Jeera - 1 tbspn
Thuvar dhall - 1/2 cup
Coconut grated - 1/2 cup
Small Onion - 1/4 kg (also known as Sambar Onion)
Brinjal - 1/4 kg
Turmeric powder - a pinch
Salt - To taste

Method:
For grinding:
Cut the onion into pieces.
In a pan add little oil and fry coriander seeds, gram dhall, pepper, jeera, red chillies, thuvar dhall, onion and grated coconut.
Grind everything into a coarse paste.

Pressure cook thuvar dhall.
Boil the tamrind paste with turmeric powder and salt. When it boils, add the onion and brinjal and bring it to boil.
Now add the grounded paste. When it blends well, add thuvar dhall to it.

For seasoning:
Season it with gingely oil. Add mustard when it splutters add jeera and hing. Spread curry leaves on top of the Venjanam and pour the seasoning on top of it.

Dear Tulsi,
If fresh coconut is not available, you can alternate it with copra or dry coconut, but still it tastes simply superb with fresh coconut.
