My summer vacation: Gift of my life time
My non-arrival at your family summer vacation just went as planned,
You felt fortunate not to meet me as you could keep your family happy
Enjoyment of your summer vacation was at the cost of my absence
You enjoyed beautiful sunset without me
I was drenched in tears for not being with you
You have given me gift of my life time,
summer vacation which I can never forget

EYC 15 - My memorable vacation
Generally for summer vacation we go to our maternal uncles’ place. But when I was in ninth standard it was a different experience. One of my father's friend bought a new luxury bus. So he decided that we should go for a trip as it was summer. It was decided that many of our family friend including my father's friend and his family and few of his friends would go for it. The destination was decided as Calcutta and its surrounding areas. We packed our bag and started dumping things. It was an eight days trip. So all of us packed whatever is required. From my family it was me my sister, brother and mother. Then all from my neighborhood too joined. One grandma and her daughter and her cousin brother too joined. We started our journey as usual Indian time, we were supposed to start at seven o clock in the evening. But it got delayed by twelve hours. So the next day morning 8 o clock we started.
Journey was nice we were making fun. In between we stopped in one place, cooked food and had our lunch. By the time we reached Calcutta it was already evening. My father's friend's brother was
working for a company and the company's owner had a big house. They had given us to stay for two days and the real drama started.
We all ran to their house. It’s a well built furnished house. Soon we arrived we started fighting for rooms. Anyway somehow we settled. In our group many people were unknown to each other.
Girls once again the fun started. All the ladies slept in one room. Middle of the night one aunty discovered one man sleeping next to another aunty. She started grumbling. In ladies room what this man doing and started scolding the lady without realizing that the man is not her husband it’s her husband’s cousin brother. Nobody knew who he was except me and I could not open my mouth seeing the situation.
However next day morning we all were fighting for bathroom and did lot of drama. Then we set out for Calcutta tour. We finished everywhere. You should have seen the aunties in their mid forties and fifties were scared to cross the road even if there is a green signal.
The ultimate fun started in the third day. We went to Kalighat. There we were supposed to board the metro train which is under ground. Uncle came with a short speech that the train stops for few minutes so enter as soon as possible. We all were waiting for the train and moreover all were first timers to go in an escalator. Somehow the young folk managed now it’s the time for aunties and grandmas. My neighbor grandma what she did is she will go down in one and again climb the next one to go up thinking that that it the so called metro train. All of us tried to stop her. Because the moment you go to catch her. She would have climbed the next one. Somehow atlast that drama came to an end. By that time the train arrived and we followed uncle's instruction and smashed everyone on our way and boarded the train. Poor people there were watching our drama. While coming back we came by tram. The experience to travel in a tram is superb. You can walk faster than the tram. In between we would get down from the tram and walk and again get into it.
As the days are getting over our fun would increase. I still remember in the Birla planetarium it was so dark. We went inside and I was holding tightly one aunt’s hand. On return I was holding a tall handsome boys hand. It was so nice you know (LOL).
We did our bit of shopping. Where ever the bargain does not work we would leave the place and in return get nicely from the locals in their language. Of course we understand what they say but pretend as if we have not heard anything.
Afterwards we headed towards Nadiya and Navadeep. There it was even more fun. We cooked in one place. It was an empty paddy field. There we had Taadi I don’t know what they call it in English. It’s very good for stomach. But you should drink it before sun rise. I had that one and did not realize the effect. In the whole bus the sun rays were falling on me. I went tipsy and saw everything's going merry go round way. I could not control myself. Before I could collapse uncle told me to sleep for a while. It was very funny the way I was walking was funny as I thought everything is going round so I would be holding the bus or some tree or someone next to me. Somehow I managed that day.
We went to Iskon temple. There it’s a pin drop silence. So all were advised not to talk. But we did some kind of noise which raised many eyebrows there. At last one aunty fell down with a big bang on the floor. Where ever we went made some kind of blunder but all together it was fun.
We wrapped up everything and it’s time to return. But we had so much of fun we could not realize the days. It was the eighth day and on the way back we went to Digha beach. It’s a nice beach, we played in the water for some time and as evening approached we returned to our bus. Then we set out for our return journey.
Captured many memories in camera but don’t know where those photographs are. Today when I think about this special summer vacation I miss many people. And in that some are no more. Though it was a short vacation but a memorable one which will be there with me forever.

Summer holidays are a boon or bane?
All children land up in grandparent’s home likewise I and my three siblings all landed up in grandma’s place, there was a well with water which never was in our homes in Bangalore as there was water shortage in madras now Chennai and so they used that water for gardening toilet and other purposes and the corporation water that came alternative days were kept for drinking and cooking only.
The more members the more work but all of us used to give a hand as it was more fun in that age to carry water and help out, that too drawing water from the well is a great amusement with getting drenched while filling the large tank built next to the well.
No outings as our uncles and aunts were all working they used to come very late and too tired to take us out , though poor things they sometime used to take turns to take us out..
While in beach one episode that has etched very deep is the one I and my uncle who was just 5ft and I was 5.4 ft even when I was just 14 and we used to play hanging ladder that is one person on each side of a ladder that is fixed to a big bar of pipe and one can swing while one comes down the other would go up and when they come down u get a high, now there is nothing wrong with the game but there used to be a big crowd as I was big made and my uncle was Punic, if I held the ladder down for long he and his dothi would be hung above and if I am mischievous mood I used to do that, and while he cannot hold me because I was heavy to be held on top, so the crowd used to enjoy this joke a lot, but in that age who cares about who is looking we used to play a lot…
The next thing is no going out in the sun, so my grandma after giving us lunch would order us to stay indoors and play pallanguzhi, aadu puli and carom board, now this is a charming game I picked up in that age, for some reason my siblings were more interested in hide and seek whereas I had the carom board to myself and I used to arrange and hit the coins and learnt a lot many back shots and side shots and so on, and i needed powder every day and one day the chalk powder got over and i took the talcum and my grandma gave me the lifetime scolding for doing something so expensive and which was kept for aunt who work, children never realise these things... Even now I am good at it after a long gap still can win a game hand down….
My brother the only son in our family used to be pampered a lot so a rita ice-cream used to come they used to bring it in carts in those days and it used to be white not vanilla but just white with some nice flavor I am unable to recollect now, and each ice-cream used to cost some 1re or so but grandma was against all these outside stuff would make some nice homemade snacks and would insist we eat that more, in the sweltering heat we had no go but to have cold matke ka paani and snacks…
The day we are to return is joy as Bangalore was and is a lot cooler than Chennai…
