To make rotis soft add little bit of oil and make the dough in warm water. Keep it aside covered with moist cloth for about 30 minutes before making Rotis. Your rotis will become soft.

I agree with Ashmita about adding warm water, salt and oil while making dough. Along with that tip try this.
when making the roti, roll it only on one side. put it on hot tava and let the bubbles come.then turn and lt bubbles come again. The press the roti with wet towel gently or moist tissue paper.Keep turning and donot let the roti sit on tava unturnd longer than 30-40 sec. Remove from heat, put some butter on one side and put in box lined with tissue and and cover with lid immediately. It will remian soft for a day. If you want to avoid putting butter, prepare rotis 30 minutes before eating and they will remain soft too

Salt and oil makes rotis soft but for people who wants to cut down on oil. you can add litle bit of buttermilk, salt and water. Make the dough and keep it aside for 1 hour. You need to serve this rotis warm as they will become hard as time goes.

dear salvadisa, riti if made on less flame will turn chubby and hard after sometime.adding milk to the water while kneeeding also helps.when you turn the roti on hot tava,do not turn it again and again,as this will make it crispy.as tulsi has directed, this is the best way to keep roti soft for the dsay.also, when one roti is made, immidiately cover it into a cotton roti cloth and put it into the roti casseroll.if roti gets exposed to air,it becomes harder.

i first add milk then put the atta and salt and knead and add a little more water and knead to an appropriate consistancy and then add some oil to make it more soft like tomato while you press it, now on a non stick tawa which is always done on a 45deg angle of flame that is not simmer nor high, in between and put it up on one side swirl with a nice napkin and then turn again once it rises i remove these, they do keep softer for the next day too..sunkan
